Plankton Genes and Extracellular Organic Substances in the Ocean

چکیده
Dissolved organic matter (DOM) in the ocean represents about 662 billion tons of C, 200 times more than living biomass. It is produced mainly by microbial primary production. The largest fraction this DOM old (>weeks to months) and both chemically biologically recalcitrant. remainder young (seconds weeks), labile surface active. Part latter changes rheological properties bulk phase water at interfaces including sea microlayer (SML). In order abundance, consists sugars, amino acids, fatty acids nucleic often incorporated into complex polymers. molecules are genes, further modified enzymes themselves genes. its as well biogeochemical fluxes may thus be plankton These influence atmospheric climate, which return acts on biota. Viral infection furthermore modify prokaryotic eukaryotic genes their expression. Therefore, genomes climates they subject Darwinian-type selection. Research programs need integrate ecology, rheology, biogeochemistry genomics, find associations among them.

Microbial Extracellular Polymeric Substances (EPSs) in Ocean Systems
Microbial cells (i.e., bacteria, archaea, microeukaryotes) in oceans secrete a diverse array of large molecules, collectively called extracellular polymeric substances (EPSs) or simply exopolymers. These secretions facilitate attachment to surfaces that lead to the formation of structured 'biofilm' communities. In open-water environments, they also lead to formation of organic colloids, and lar...

متن کاملMicroscale Complexity in the Ocean: Turbulence, Intermittency and Plankton Life
This contribution reviews the nonlinear stochastic properties of turbulent velocity and passive scalar intermittent fluctuations in Eulerian and Lagrangian turbulence. These properties are illustrated with original data sets of (i) velocity fluctuations collected in the field and in the laboratory, and (ii) temperature, salinity and in vivo fluorescence (a proxy of phytoplankton biomass, i.e. u...
متن کاملUse of riverine organic matter in plankton
The use of riverine allochthonous organic matter by plankton in the northern Baltic Sea was studied using stable isotopes of carbon and nitrogen. Dissolved and particulate material was sampled in the main Swedish rivers entering the Bothnian Bay and the Bothnian Sea. At 4 sea stations, dissolved matter, plankton and nekton were sampled in l l size-classes: below 0.7 pm filtrate, 0.7-5, 5-20, 20...
متن کاملthe relationship between learners critical thinking ability and their performance in the reading sections of the tofel and ielts test
the study reflected in this thesis aims at finding out relationships between critical thinking (ct), and the reading sections of tofel and ielts tests. the study tries to find any relationships between the ct ability of students and their performance on reading tests of tofel and academic ielts. however, no research has ever been conducted to investigate the relationship between ct and the read...
